Abstract

In recent years, there has been continuing interest in the development of robust controllers for a
container ship for the way-point tracking problem. Despite their high efficiency, high-order robust controllers
may not be feasible for real-time implementations due to hardware and computational limitations. This paper
presents an evolutionary-based robust controller design for the position tracking system of a container ship. The
developed algorithm allows for the implementation of simple-structure controllers that satisfy robust stability
and performance requirements. The performance of the designed controller is validated and compared using
the ship steering system. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed controller.
