Abstract

Due to the inherent fluctuations of the power system, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) could be applied to enhance the power system stability. Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) employed for parallel reactive power compensation is one of the second-generation FACTS devices. This paper presents a novel optimal robust scheme to design damping controller of STATCOM. The proposed scheme is given based on non-dominated multi-objective optimization problem by considering 𝜇-synthesis method and eigenvalues analysis. To cope with the power system uncertainties, a fixed-structure controller is used by applying P 􀀀 Δ 􀀀K configuration to reach system robustness and stability. Moreover, optimal performance in the nominal operating point is considered as one of the main objectives for the proposed controller designing besides the robust performance. A comprehensive and coherent approach is proposed to achieve the best values of the controller parameters. The suggested controller’s supremacy is represented through a comparison of its performance with some other controllers obtained by D-K reduced and H1 method. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method and the designed controller gives favorable stability and robustness.
